The difference between silk & satin?

Do you know the difference between silk & satin?

SATINÖRNGOTT

When shopping for clothes, bedding, or accessories, you’ll often come across the words silk and satin. They're sometimes used interchangeably, which can be confusing – but they’re actually not the same thing. Here, we explain the differences!

Silk – an exclusive natural material

Silk is a natural fiber that comes from the cocoon of the silkworm. It has been used for thousands of years, especially in Asia, and is known for its sheen and luxurious feel. Genuine silk is cool in the summer and warm in the winter, making it ideal for both clothing and bedding.

Properties of silk:

  • 100% natural

  • Breathable and moisture-wicking

  • Temperature-regulating

  • Hypoallergenic

  • Usually more expensive than synthetic materials

Satin – a weaving technique, not a material

Satin, on the other hand, is not a material but a weaving technique that gives fabric a shiny, smooth surface on one side and a matte finish on the other. Satin can be woven from many different fibers – including silk, polyester, nylon, and cotton. That means silk fabric can be satin-woven, but not all satin is silk.

Properties of satin:

  • Smooth and glossy surface

  • Can be made from both natural and synthetic fibers

  • Price and quality vary depending on the material

  • Less breathable if made from synthetics

So how do you know what you're getting?

If you’re looking for a fabric that’s both luxurious and gentle on the skin, genuine silk is a safe choice – but expect a higher price. Satin, on the other hand, can offer a similar look at a more affordable cost, especially for fashion and décor.

Shopping tips:

  • Read the fabric description carefully – does it say “100% silk” or “polyester satin”?

  • Feel the fabric – silk usually feels cooler and “drier” than synthetics.

  • Choose silk if you prioritize durability and natural fibers; satin if you want shine at a lower price.
